The Singularity Trap by Dennis Taylor

7/12/2018

I listened to The Singularity Trap by Dennis Taylor on Audible. Taylor also wrote the Bobiverse series, which I loved. If you've been reading this blog at all, you know I love a good sci-fi novel, and I enjoyed this one as well. It follows Ivan Pritchard, an AI programmer down on his luck. Ivan joins a space mining crew to try and strike it rich so his family can have a better life. At times it reminded me of the Expanse series, and at others of Seveneves.

Key Takeaways
  • As always, orbital mechanics is hard!
  • Future interaction with intergalactic life forms could be interesting.
  • There are three great filters that our world is approaching with scary speed.

Memorable Quotes
I do not have many memorable quotes from this one, unfortunately. Given I listened on Audible I wasn't able to take notes or underline. At some point I'll try and come back to this to add some.

Rating: 6/10
While very entertaining as an audiobook, and still worth the read, this did not live up to Taylor's other work. The Bobiverse series is suffused with humor and tense conflict. The Singularity Trap lacked that same comedic relief that was so enjoyable. Ray Porter is an excellent narrator, and I'm going to seek out more of his work for my upcoming road trip to LA.
